Key regulations

What an Indian brand has to comply with to list in United Kingdom.

UKCA marking replacing CE for most regulated goods (electrical, toys, PPE) — phased in post-Brexit.

Responsible Person on UK soil required for cosmetics (UK SCPN portal).

UK food business registration required for food sellers.

BRC (British Retail Consortium) standards expected for premium retail listings.

Import duties

How customs treat India-origin goods entering United Kingdom.

UK import duty rates from India are mostly 0–12%, varied by HS code. Textiles and footwear can hit 16–17%.

Customs entry needs an EORI number (GB prefix).

No de minimis threshold — VAT is due from the first £0.01, but Amazon collects on B2C shipments below £135.

Sales tax / VAT / GST

The indirect-tax landscape for D2C sellers in United Kingdom.

VAT: 20% standard, 5% reduced, 0% on children’s clothing, books, and some food categories.

Non-UK FBA sellers must register for UK VAT from their first sale (no threshold).

Above £85k turnover (resident sellers) VAT registration is mandatory regardless.

Frequently asked questions

The questions Indian founders ask us most often about United Kingdom.

  • How to sell on Amazon UK from India?

Register for UK VAT (mandatory for FBA from your first sale), obtain a UK EORI number, set up a UK or multi-currency receiving account (Payoneer GBP / Wise), open Amazon UK Seller Central, file a UKIPO trademark and apply to Brand Registry, and prepare UK-English listings. Cosmetics need a UK-based Responsible Person on the label; toys need an authorised representative.

  • Do I need to register for VAT in the UK?

If you use FBA in the UK or store goods in a UK warehouse, you must register for UK VAT from your first sale — no threshold for non-UK sellers. UK VAT is 20% standard, 5% reduced, 0% on children’s clothing and books.

  • Does my UK Amazon account work for the EU after Brexit?

No. Brexit decoupled the UK from the EU, so UK FBA inventory does not ship to EU customers (and vice versa). You need separate UK and EU stock pools, plus a UK VAT registration for the UK and at least one EU VAT registration for Pan-EU FBA.
